Background Images:

Safari v51 does not support the background-repeat and background-position properties.
MacIE 5.0 and Opera 6.01 do not support any background image properties at all.

Highlighting and Background Color:

MacIE 5.0 supports highlighting and background color in transparent GIFs for the entire rectangular region.
Chimera 0.6 and Opera 6.01 support highlighting and background color in transparent GIFs, but only in the font-size height.
Safari v51 does not support any highlighting or background color in transparent GIFs at all.
